Anemone-Japanese 01-230x153The Japanese Windflower, Anemone x hybrida, is the showiest of the anemones and one of the world’s favourite perennials. This beautiful garden treasure is the hybrid result of many genetic crosses between the best of several wild species.

The plants produce rosettes of handsome, somewhat hairy foliage that nearly dies away during the winter and reappears in early spring.
Soon tall, stout stems begin to branch upwards and are later covered in masses of large, saucer-shaped flowers in late summer and autumn.

These are in shades of pink, white and rose in single and double,  frilly and plain forms. Japanese Anemone is adaptable to most soils and conditions. They thrive in semi-shaded woodland gardens and are equally at home in full sun provided the site remains moist.

Now that the flower stems have faded, cut them to the ground. Although the plants dislike disturbance, they can easily be moved now while dormant. Dig around the plants broadly to insure as little root damage as possible and replant immediately at the same depth.

Once established they will spread to make impressive clumps that can be left alone for years. For the very best show try using a mulch of general plant food mixed with well-aged compost spread around the plants in spring. Makes an excellent cut flower.
