While annual ground covers are sometimes small and last only a year or less, they have tremendous value far surpassing their apparent humble status. Many hardy, easily grown, colourful cut flowers are annual ground covers.
And they are more than just a pretty face. They can also help make gardening easier and more successful. That’s because annual ground covers “cover the ground” with foliage and flowers. The shade this creates means fewer weeds can sprout through the ground cover thus less weeding for the gardener.
And because the foliage covers the ground like a lid covers a pot, moisture is held far longer and more evenly in the soil meaningless need to water the garden. Annual ground covers also can create a striking background to taller plantings such as spring flowering bulbs. A classic example is pansy or viola.
