Some of the prettiest pastels in flowering shrubs at this time of year come from the Crepe Myrtles. Lagerstroemia indica is a native of the warmer regions of China. It can be grown as a shrub or tree. The secret is in the pruning. When a central leader Is encouraged and side shoots are removed the result is a graceful tree to 6m smothered in small flower clusters.

Because flowers are produced on new wood, Crepe myrtle can be cut to the ground in late winter or early spring and will still produce 2m arching canes that flower brilliantly the same season.
