echeveria 06-230x153Echeverias succulents were made for hot, dry summers. The Echeverias pictured here along with many close relatives are native to Mexico and tropical America where summers couldn't be much more extreme.

Named after the Mexican botanical artist Atanacio Echeverria, these are an artist's dream.

The fleshy leaves are tightly packed on short, creeping stems that create the effect of perfectly designed flowers.

Leaf colours range from silvery white, every shade of green, salmon, orange, pink, yellows and creams to grey and nearly blue in a wide variety of leaf designs and sizes.

Most even have showy, unusual flowers! They look stunning when used as a border or for carpet bedding.  Treat them as annuals wherever winters are severe.

These brilliant container plants enjoy a sunny window, or hot patio and thrive in coastal and windy sites.

They can tolerate moderate frosts but dislike soggy soil, especially over winter. Drainage must be perfect.

Now is an excellent time to increase plants from the small side rosettes around the base of the plant or individual leaves.

Kept slightly moist in a sandy soil mix, new growth should be rapid.
